Singapore Zoo and River Safari, Singapore

During Michael and Kathy's visit we decided to go to the Singapore Zoo with them.  It has been about six years since we last visited the zoo and while some things have remained the same, a lot has changed too.  The zoo is still the same, but a new section called the River Safari has been added.  The River Safari is a river-themed wildlife park and it has been built around the Upper Seletar Reservoir.  It is home to a variety of water animals, land animals and Singapore's very own giant panda bears (well they are actually on loan from China).

Singapore's two giant panda bears are Kai Kai (the male) and Jia Jia (the female).  Kai Kai is six years old and Jia Jia is five.  Kai Kai and Jia Jia arrived from Chengdu, China in September 2012 and they received a huge welcome (there was so much excitement when they arrived).  Needless to say, they are the main attraction at the River Safari and very popular with visitors.

We spent the whole day at the zoo and River Safari and it was great to see some of the animals who have always been part of the zoo like the orangutans and elephants, and also the new additions like the giant pandas, the endangered Indian gharial (fish-eating crocodile) and the Chinese giant salamander.

Bali, Indonesia

We took a four day trip to Bali with Sam's brother Michael and his girlfriend Kathy.  This was Michael and Kathy's first trip to Bali and our third.  Unfortunately during our time in Bali it rained a lot, but we managed to make the best of it and had a good time anyway.

La Dolce Villa
During our stay in Bali we rented a private villa in Seminyak.  Seminyak is situated on the south west tip of Bali and it is the same area where we stayed during our first trip to Bali.  The villa came with a kitchen, an eating area, a living area, three separate bedrooms with ensuites and a pool.  It was a comfortable home away from home and we enjoyed our stay here.

Ubud
We hired a driver for the day to take us to Ubud and the Tegalalang Rice Paddies.  Ubud is the cultural centre of Bali and is often referred to as "the real Bali".  Ubud is home to many artists, painters, galleries and craft shops, and it is a nice area to explore on foot.  We decided to go to Ubud to show Michael and Kathy a different side of Bali.  We spent the afternoon walking around and doing some window shopping.

Tegalalang Rice Paddies
Tegalalang is one of Bali's most beautiful and famous rice paddies.  Situated just outside Ubud, we decided to make a stop here as Michael and Kathy had never been to a rice paddy. Tegalalang is breathtaking and did not disappoint.

Pura Tanah Lot
We hired a driver for the afternoon to take us to Tanah Lot.  Tanah Lot is the most famous of the seven sea temples along Bali's west coast.  Tanah Lot is located on a rock that juts out of the Indian Ocean.  During high tide the temple is not accessible, but when the tide is low, a sandy stretch of land connecting the rock and island appears, enabling visitors to go across to the temple.

Rain
It rained a lot while we were in Bali and Kathy and I had to get ourselves rain ponchos.  Fortunately it wasn't cold, just wet.

Sunshine
On our last day in Bali we finally got some nice sunny weather and decided to go to the beach for a swim.

Fat Gajah Fine Noodles and Dumplings
We had a few memorable meals in Bali, one of which was at Fat Gajah Fine Noodles and Dumplings.  We stumbled across this restaurant while out walking one day and decided to give it a try.  We enjoyed an assortment of steamed and fried dumplings, and a couple of different noodle dishes.  Everything was beautifully presented and delicious.

Naughty Nuri's
We were really keen to try this place, as it had come highly recommended by a few people.  We decided to walk to Naughty Nuri's from our villa and didn't quite realise how far it was.  That said, it ended up taking us over two hours to get there and so by the time we got there we were all very hungry.  Naughty Nuri's is famous for its BBQ ribs and this is what we had.  It was a good meal and now we know why it is so busy and popular.
