London, United Kingdom

After our enjoyable visit to Geneva, we flew to London for three days.  We spent time catching up with people that we know, visiting some of our favourite places and doing some of our favourite things.

During our visit, many of the main streets were blocked off for the RideLondon event, a cycling event that attracted thousands of cyclists and spectators.

The Savoy Hotel
We were fortunate to have another great stay at The Savoy Hotel in Covent Garden.  We got a really nice room on the 7th floor and enjoyed the entire experience.

High Tea
A visit to London is not complete without high tea and we decided to have this at The Savoy Hotel.  It was a treat for us, as this is not the kind of food that we eat on a regular basis.  Fortunately the hotel was able to squeeze us in with a last-minute reservation.  The sandwiches, scones and cakes were all enjoyable, as was the whole experience.

Lunch at Simpson's
We met our friend Gerry Treacy for lunch at Simpson's, which is part of The Savoy Hotel.  We had a great lunch that included scrumptious fish cakes, roast beef, Yorkshire pudding and a roasted squash dish that was to die for.

Theatre Shows
One of the things that we love to do in London is visit the theatre.  London's West End has many great theatre productions on at the moment and it was hard to choose which ones to see with limited time.  We both love musicals, so we ended up seeing three musicals - Once (based on the Oscar-winning film of the same name); Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (based on the much loved Roald Dahl book and directed by Academy Award winner Sam Mendes); and The Commitments (based on Roddy Doyle's best selling novel).  The simplicity of the storyline of Once; the magical sets of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory; and the music from The Commitments is what made each stand out.

Proudly Canadian
We were chuffed to stumble across this pub....nice to see a Canadian presence in London!

Borough Market
One of our favourite places to visit in London is Borough Market.  This is a great market with a variety of delicious fresh produce, baked goods and artisan products.  We went there early on Saturday morning and had breakfast there........had the best Scotch egg ever (a hard boiled egg covered in sausage and breadcrumbs, then baked or deep fried)!

Jubilee Market and Covent Garden Market
Jubilee Market and Covent Garden Market are both situated within a short walking distance from The Savoy Hotel, so it was very convenient for us.  Both markets sells a variety of arts and crafts, clothing, antiques and artisan food.

Lunch at Covent Garden Market
At Covent Garden Market we enjoyed live entertainment and meat pies with peas for lunch.  It was a great way to spend an afternoon in London.
