Zermatt, Switzerland

From Venice we took the train to Milan, then on to Brig in Switzerland and then finally to Zermatt.  David has been to Zermatt before, but this was my first visit.  The main reason for us visiting Zermatt was to see the majestic Matterhorn.

Zermatt Village
Zermatt is one of Switzerland's top resorts and the village itself is charming and has so much character.  We had an enjoyable time walking through the village and doing some window shopping.  Zermatt attracts many visitors from all over the world who are there to see the Matterhorn, to relax or to take part in a number of outdoor activities that includes skiing, mountaineering and hiking.

Lunch in Zermatt
On our last day in Zermatt we stopped at a restaurant in the village for lunch.  We had an assortment of cured meats and raclette.  Raclette is a type of cheese that is heated and then the melted part is scraped off.  The word "raclette" comes from the French word "to scrape".  It is typically served with boiled potatoes, pickled onions and cornichon pickles.  Simple, but delicious!

Swiss Dinner
We had one of the best meals of our entire trip in Zermatt at a restaurant called Schäferstube.  This restaurant came highly recommended by the staff at the hotel where we stayed at and it did not disappoint.  The items on the menu were traditionally Swiss and we ordered a few different dishes to share.  We had a salad (one of the best salads we've ever had - the lettuce leaves were fresh from the garden and the dressing was to die for!), raclette (got to watch the chef prepare this), cheese fondue and lamb sausages served with vegetables and rosti (grated boiled potatoes that are pan fried).
