Chinese New Year is one of the most important holidays and celebrations for the Chinese. Also known as the Spring Festival, Chinese New Year starts on the first day of the first lunar month on the Chinese calendar and ends 15 days later. Chinese New Year (Year of the Goat) was celebrated from the 19th February - 5th March this year.
Chinese New Year is one of the biggest holidays in Singapore and it is one of the most festive times of the year. The city buzzes with excitement in the weeks leading up to the celebration and Singapore's Chinatown is especially vibrant. It is a great time to visit Chinatown, because the atmosphere is lively and there are many special new year items on sale. These items include many sweet and savoury treats like candied fruit, sweetened lotus root, lotus seeds, dried persimmons and dried melon seeds.
