Kuang Si Waterfall, Luang Prabang, Laos

Kuang Si or Kouang Si Waterfall is one of the main highlights of Luang Prabang and it did not disappoint.  Kuang Si Waterfall is situated about 23 km from town and it took us about 45 minutes to get there by car (we hired a driver).

Kuang Si may be a single waterfall, but it is big and it feeds into a series of falls and pools that are beautiful.  The waterfall itself is absolutely stunning and is one of the most beautiful waterfalls we have ever seen.

Tat Kuang Si Bear Rescue Centre

The Tat Kuang Si Bear Rescue Centre is situated within a few minutes walk from the waterfall.  This centre was set up by Free The Bears Fund in 2003, after local authorities confiscated three bear cubs and asked for assistance to help look after them.  The centre has since opened its doors to other bears that have been illegally captured from the wild and have been confiscated by Lao authorities.  These bears are sought after and captured by poachers for their bile, which is used in traditional medicine. Most of the bears that we saw were Asiatic Black Bears, also known as Moon Bears and they are one of Laos' most endangered species.  This centre is doing an amazing job of protecting and looking after these animals.
