Leshan Giant Buddhu, Leshan, China

During our visit to Chengdu, we decided to visit the Leshan Giant Buddha.  This Buddha is situated in Leschan City, 162 kilometres from Chengdu.  We hired a driver and it took us approximately three hours to get there.

Leshan Giant Buddha is a UNESCO heritage site and it is the largest stone buddha in the world.  The Buddha is 173 feet high and there are two ways to see the Buddha: either along the river by boat or by foot.  We opted to take the boat ride as we were a little pressed for time (it takes about two hours to walk to the Buddha, down the many stairs to the feet of the Buddha and then up many stairs to get to the exit.

The Buddha was carved out of the cliff face during the Tang Dynasty in 713 and it took 90 years to carve.  It is situated at the confluence of three rivers (the Min river, the Qingyi river and the Dadu river) and it is a truly impressive Buddha.  It was well worth the long ride there and back to see this Buddha as it was one of the highlights of our visit to Chengdu.
